27 July 05 Today we slept-in and had breakfast at 9am. We then walked to the local train station and headed towards the main station in Vienna. Adam and I split up at 11am, intending to meet at 3pm. He walked and I took the U (Metro) to the Danube River to start a walk of the Ring... that’s the center ring around the most important things to see. I got off at the north and started working my way down the ring counter clockwise… seeing the sights, including St. Stephens Church. I was headed towards the palace, just past the Parliament House, around 12:30pm when I saw Adam walking towards me so we decided to stay together (this is a huge city, so I can’t believe we met up). We passed the Opera House and walked to the Palace. The Palace Hofburg takes up blocks and blocks of the city. The gardens go on forever. Adam decided to chill in the park for a while, and I walked around the whole complex to see the three churches that were on or adjacent to the Royal property: St. Augustine, St Michaels, and Minoritinskirche. Mozart stuff is prevalent here. Still looking for the Beethoven stuff... there is a Haydn Museum here and I may check that out. The size of everything here is enormous, I think even grander than the places we saw in Paris.
Tonight we have tickets to a Mozart concert in the Concert Hall. First half is symphonic music. The second half is Opera arias. Everyone dresses in authentic 18th century garb, including the orchestra. That begins at 8pm and we will go back to the B&B after that... should arrive back by 11pm. Tomorrow we have train reservations to go to Weingarten... so it will be a full day of travel.
